Send this child to school! ($15 per month for one year)
Summary
“I sleep on the ground on a piece of carton. Many times, she has nothing to give me and I go to sleep without eating. I never celebrated my birthday, and I do not know if I will one day. I never went to school, but I dream to become a doctor.” Wilbert Jolivert
Household
I was born on December 30, 1999. I am 10 years old. I never went to school since my childhood because my parents died when I was very young. I have two brothers and two sisters. My brothers are Sedner and Mychelet. My sisters are Ashline and Marie Michelle. I do not know how old they are, because they are not living close to me. I am living with someone in Port-au-Prince as a restavek [slave child].
I am living here for eight years with Manette Museau. She is 60 years old. Manette is doing nothing.
Living conditions
WORK
I get up at five o’clock AM everyday. First, I wash dishes, and scrub the floor with a piece of tissue. I arrange the bed. I go to take water, take buckets of water to fill a drum. When they make laundry on Saturday I take more water. I wash my clothes myself. Sometimes in the afternoon I go to throw garbage away. I do that kind of work everyday. I go to sleep about nine o’clock. Sometimes I feel so tired I cannot rest.
SHELTER
There is only one room where I am living. I sleep on the ground on a piece of carton. There is no place to put my waste but there is a place to put dirty water. The place we put sewage is not far from the place that we are living. There are many mice and rats but no bugs. There are mosquitoes and cockroaches. Mosquitoes don’t stop biting me, and sometimes rats bite me in my foot. There is electricity. The women that I stay with pays $10 Ht [$1.42 US] per month for the electricity. I use candles when there is no electricity.
HEALTH
Manette does not have money to go to the hospital with me. So when I have fever, headache and other sickness, she buys some medicine at the street without advice of a physician.
FOOD
Manette has no money to feed me either. Sometimes I eat corn without sauce. I cannot drink juice. I sometimes eat bread with butter, or bread with sugar water. I rarely eat rice because it’s expensive to buy rice. Many times, she has nothing to give me and I go to sleep without eating. I never celebrated my birthday, and I do not know if I will one day.
EDUCATION
I do not go to school since the woman where I am living with has no money to send me to school. I am only there to work all day. I feel sad when I see many kids are going to school. I think school is very important.
Personal qualities and Dreams
I am a little boy who is kind, intelligent, and generous, but I am shy and I can get angry when children of my age robs my things, beat me, and bother me. I am honest, sincere, respectful, and I like to share with other people. I like to give advice and tell the truth.
My friends say that I am a kind boy too. I like to play. I like to play soccer. I am happy when I play soccer because it is my favorite sport, and people say that I will be a good soccer player.
Dreams
My education is very important, but now I cannot say anything about it. I dream to become a doctor, but I know to become a doctor you need to go to school, to study hard.
I know my dream will come true, when I will find someone to help me, with my education, and my living condition.

The long-term and immediate needs of a person in extreme poverty are far greater than can be solved in a single year. People in Need Partnership focuses on the long-term needs of your partner, though we do provide research and a certain amount of help in other areas. You may enroll in optional programs to provide help in additional areas of your choice. Making a meaningful future possible for your partner is our ultimate goal. This page may not have been updated with and so may not reflect optional programs created before July, 2009.
