Household
My name is Laura Lundi. I was born on October 27, 2001 in Cite Soleil 10 (a slum in Port-au-Prince, Haiti). I am six years old. I have always lived with my family. My mother has 4 children. Only two of them attend school. I have stopped going to school for one year. I was in 1st grade. The name of my last school is Sante Professional de ST-Jean Bosco. I went to school from Monday to Friday. I went in the morning. The name of my sisters and brothers are:
Gaitine Lundi who is 13 years old
Dimitrie Lundi who is 11 years old
I, Laura Lundi who is 6 years old
Pikane Lundi who is 4 years old
My father’s name is Vincent. He is 40 years old. My mother is Joseline Joseph. She is 29 years old. My mother used to sell food. Now she stopped because she went bankrupt. My father doesn’t have money to give her to keep on doing the business.
Living conditions
Job Opportunities
Besides selling food, my mother can do other things to make a living. She used to sell detergent, coals also. My father works at a factory. His income is really low. My father works from Monday to Saturday. He goes to work from 5am to 3pm. The factory is going to be closed, so our situation is going to be worse. We are living in a one room house. I sleep on a little bed with two of my brothers. I feel uncomfortable because the bed is too small. The roof of the house leaks. Whenever it rains my father uses a container to catch the water. It comes through roof. We throw garbage and sewage on a piece of isolated land. We don’t have a toilet. There are a lot of big rats and big bugs in the house. There is electricity in the house. My parents pay $10 Ht [$1.42 US] per month. The house is for my parents.
Education
I went to school. I was still in 1st grade because I didn’t pass. If I can go, I would have to repeat all of my classes this year. I will go in the same grade until I pass to go to a higher level. I don’t know how to read or write yet. But I love school. If I go to school this year I am going to study hard to pass all of my classes.
Food and Nutrition
The Lundi family doesn’t eat regularly. Sometimes, we eat once a day. Some other times, if we don’t find a good neighbor to sell them on credit, we spend the whole day without food. Whenever my mother has money to cook for the family, the food is never enough for us. The salesperson doesn’t want to give the food on credit because we owe too much money.
Health and Medical
I don’t know whether I am sick because, as my parents say, they don’t take me to the hospital often. But they notice that I have a cold. The people in the neighborhood have migraine, fever and cold.
Community information
In this area we don’t have pure water but we take water from a tank nearby. We pay 5 gourdes [13 cents US] for a bucket of water when they give public water. When have take it in private we pay 7 gourdes.

The long-term and immediate needs of a person in extreme poverty are far greater than can be solved in a single year. People in Need Partnership focuses on the long-term needs of your partner, though we do provide research and a certain amount of help in other areas. You may enroll in optional programs to provide help in additional areas of your choice. Making a meaningful future possible for your partner is our ultimate goal. This page may not have been updated with and so may not reflect optional programs created before July, 2009.
