Household

My name is Noel Roseline. I am 28 years old. I was born on September 26, 1978 in Jeremie [in Haiti]. My mother’s name is Melina Janvier. She is a farmer. I left Jeremie to live in Port au Prince because my parents’ couldn’t take care of me. Their economic situation couldn’t allow them to do that. I have been living in Jalouzie since 2005. I have three children:
Wolguine Demostoir, my first born, is 9 years old. Her father’s name is Roland Demostoir. She hasn’t gone to school yet.
Venia Jeune, who is 4 years old. Her father’s name, is Vicko Jeune.
Francesca Jeune, who is 1 years 4 months old.

Living conditions

FINANCES
I am a housekeeper. I go to work in Dezermite (area). I go to work every morning at 6am and come back home at 5pm. They pay me $300Ht [$42.85 US] per month. This sum of money is not enough for my family because I have to eat everyday. My husband isn’t working. Everyday he goes out to try to find job to do. Very often he comes back with no money. I don’t have any relatives living in this zone.
SHELTER
The house in which I live belongs to me. Somebody gave the piece of land as a gift and I made this little house with metal sheets. It is a one room house, so there is just enough space for everybody. Some of us sleep on pieces of clothes on the ground. The others sleep on a bed that I have. The house isn’t in a good location. The roof of the house leaks. Whenever it rains the room starts to fill up with water. I put some containers under the leaking roof to catch the drops. There are a lot of rats and mice in the house. They cause me a lot of troubles. There is no safe place to put garbage and sewage. We throw them in a ravine nearby. There aren’t any toilets in the house. We do our necessities on a piece of isolated land nearby. There is electricity in the area but there isn’t any in the house because I can’t afford to pay $50Ht [$7.15 US] per month.
EDUCATION
I have been never to school. My parents didn’t have the means. I don’t know how to read and write. However, I would like to know how to read and write.
HEALTH
I am not healthy. When I talk a lot my eye is sore, my head aches. My husband is paralyzed. We have never been to the Hospital because we don’t have the means.
FOOD
I don’t eat regularly. Sometimes I wake up and if I have money I give my children something to eat and go to work. Sometimes they spend the whole day without food. We just go to sleep hoping to find something to eat the next day. Sometimes, we go 4 or 5 days without solid food. When I have money I buy corn to cook. I never buy rice because it is too expensive. We are seven to share the food. My three children, my husband, my step sister, my step brother and me, so the amount of the food is never enough.

Community information

In the area, there is no water but we are using rain water. Sometimes we go take water from very far, about 3 miles. It costs 1 gourde [3 cents US] for a bucket. When we don’t have time to go to look for water there, we have to pay 10 gourdes for a bucket of rain water. Not everybody saves the rain water: we have to have a tank to save it.
Education System and opportunities
There is no school nearby. I don’t really know the name the school which is about 3 miles away.
Health care situation
There is clinic in Petion Ville; it cost $30Ht [$4.28 US] per visit and $100Ht for medicine.
We have no parties or celebrations in this area. Because we are not feeling happy, and we don’t have money.
