Household

My name is Farah Jeune. I am 21 years old. I was born on February 2, 1987 in Jeremie [a region of Haiti]. My mother’s name is Bienerese Charles. She is a farmerette. She is 55 years old. My father died when I was 2 years old. I left my countryside, Jeremie, because my parents didn’t have the means to help me. So I decided to leave Jeremie to come to Port au Prince looking for a better life. However until now my situation isn’t getting any better. I have been living here since 2005. I have two children. Their names are:
Widmael Dornestoir, he is 5 years old.
Snider Sainjuste is 3 months old.
Widmael is living in Jeremie with my mother. His father is living in Jeremie. His father doesn’t take care of him. My mother and I are the one take care of everything for him. Snider is living with me. His father’s name is Johnny Sainjuste. His father doesn’t have a profession. He goes to the street to find jobs. Johnny Sainjuste, my husband and I are together, but we are not living in the same house. Johnny is living with his elder brother. I am living at my brother’s house. Johnny and I have a little piece of land but we don’t have money to build our house.

Living conditions

FINANCES
I used to be a housekeeper. Now, that I have a three month old baby. I can’t go to work because I have nobody to look after my baby for me.
I used to be housekeeper. I used to do the laundry, to iron, and to cook. I used to go at 6am and come back to my brother’s house at 6pm. They used to pay me two hundred fifty dollars [$36 US] per month. The money was helpful to me. I used to send a part to my mother to take care of Widmael. Now, I am doing nothing to make a living. My husband Johnny isn’t working either. Everyday, he goes to the street looking for something to do for money. However it happens very often that he gives me money.
SHELTER
The house in which I live doesn’t belong to me. It is my brother’s. He is living with his wife and three children. I have a little piece of land but we don’t have money to build our own house. My brother’s house has only one room. There is not enough space for all of us to sleep. The roof of the house leaks. There are a lot of rats, and mice. There isn’t a toilet. We do our necessities on in a piece of land nearby. There isn’t a safe place to put garbage and sewage. We throw them on the piece of land where we are used to doing our necessities.
EDUCATION
I have not been to school because my parents couldn’t afford to pay for my education. I don’t know how to read and write. I would really like to go to school.
HEALTH
My husband has a toothache and stomachache repeatedly.
FOOD
I don’t eat regularly. Sometimes, we go two or three days without solid food. When I don’t have money I buy on credit. When they don’t want to sell food to us on credit we stay without eating. When Johnny gives me money I cook something to eat. I share the food for ten people. The amount of food is never enough for us.

Community information

In this neighborhood, there is no water. If we want to get water we have to walk about 3 miles away, and a bucket cost 1 gourde [3 cents US]. When we don’t have time to go there, we use rain water. We buy it from people who have cisterns. A bucket cost 7 gourdes but it is not safe. We have to drink it because we don’t have any possibilities to buy others.
Education system and opportunities
There is no school nearby but we there is one about 2 miles away. Its name is Bayard College. It costs $300Ht [$42.80 US] per year.
Health care situation
There is no Clinic in this area. If we are sick here we have to go Petion Ville which is about 3 miles away. A visit cost $30Ht [$4.28 US] and medicine varies. It’s about $100Ht to $300Ht, depending on kind of illness.
We never celebrate any party in this area because we are all poor here.

Personal qualities and Dreams

I am a kind woman. I never steal. I don’t like to fight. I am not a gossiper. I do not lie. I am helpful, sincere, and forgiving. I am not lazy. I am patient. I love to do the chores. I would like anybody interested in helping me to know I will pray for them that God may keep on giving to them abundantly. I would like them to know that I have a little land where I would like to build my house. However I don’t have money to do that. I would like to go to school. I would like to move to another area because in this area if somebody is sick they can’t go to hospital easily. There isn’t a Hospital nearby. I would like them to help me with my two children Widmael and Snider and my younger brother Diene.
Dreams
The most important things for me are to have my own house because my elder brother’s house in which I am staying is too small. I already have a piece of land so I would like to build my house. I would like to have a business. I would like to go to vocational school. I would to become a beautician. I would like to be able to provide for my family.
